CHAPTER 10

Ultimatums

Standing before her he seemed to come alive as he stretched to his full height and breath, flexing out the imprisoned arms and legs that had been inactive too long.

Awasos watched the woman’s reaction to him and the life force returning to his body. The white scout had good cause for the bold concern he’d unconsciously displayed. But not for the reasons one would normally hold for a man’s woman? He may have been trapped, but he’d seen and learned much concerning this man’s woman.

The surprises went further than finding it was not a man he back tracked to destroy. He glimpsed on the woman’s abilities before the fall that caused him to miss her presence. Awasos didn’t find admiration in others easily and never in a squaw. The white scout showed to be impressive for an enemy. His woman proved to be no less so. That her skills saved his life weren’t easy to forget.

His gaze went slowly down to the pistol, causing her to raise the barrel in determination towards his chest. Those violet eyes flickered blue in indecision, but he wasn’t fool enough to ignore the reason behind her unusual presence. Mother bears with cubs couldn’t be more dangerous.

The space between them became electrified to a volatile plane. Jolene’s acute awareness of the man told her he wouldn’t let her just walk away. Everything inside told her she would have to stop him to save the man she loved. “Don’t make me regret saving you.”

The stiffening at her words in the expansive bronze chest was unmistakable. “You understand me, good.”

His acknowledgement was given in regretful resignation. She possessed the power to make a man forget his control and the warnings sounded loud in Awasos.

A slow anger started to take hold of Jolene over the obstacle he posed. She’d done what she needed to, but it hurt to know that by her own act she could have failed Flint. She could shoot him. A wound to those powerful legs would slow him down, but the thought repulsed her. Tying him up would be impossible, he’d never allow it.

The impasse played on her nerves. She needed to do something before he did. Her eyes darted to the low placement of the sun, adding to the truth of what she’d lost.

“Move back out, into the river.”

His proud brow rose, the anger brightening his eyes helped her hold to her resolve. “The river or a bullet, the choice is yours. I may have saved you, but I refuse to allow you to stop me. Now move it!”

The moments before he finally moved were pure agony for Jolene. When the water reached his waist he turned back to face her.

“Start swimming, I figure the pistol is good for three quarters of the distance to the other side, should you decide to turn back. Oh, I am also an expert shot.”

She braced herself for what she felt would come from him.

The smile before his words is what made her knees grow weak.

“White scout’s woman, we will meet again.
